"I'll Be Gone in the Dark," AKA Why did it take me so long to get to this?

The true crime here (eh? eh? Come for the book reviews, stay for the comedic gold, people) is that it took me so long to read this. I knew what it was about, and that Patton Oswalt's late wife was the author. I've gotten my hands on it a couple times. but something always came up.

I should have just ignored all of my responsibilities and read this beauty instead. This book is what a true crime book should be - engaging, letting us live the lives of the victims and not the killer, telling us each twist and turn the police, investigators, and the author herself faced. I, personally, don't like crime stories for the What was the killer thinking? angle. When it comes to crime, I want to know about the victims, about the investigators, and about the forensics and psychology used to hunt monsters down. This books felt catered towards me, towards that. I feel like, in another life, Michelle McNamara and I could have been friends. Her voice is clear and strong, even in the chapters that were pieced together after her death.

My only complaint is that at the end of the book, we still don't know who the GSK is - but you know, considering all the work that was put into finding him, I can't really fault anyone. Except maybe the people who nearly had him cornered on that bike and still let him slip away...but if I start talking about that, I'll never stop.

If you like true crime in any way and are leaning towards this book, jump right in. I'm glad I did.

5/5 pickles.
